Maasai Mara Reserve vs Serengeti Park: Which Safari Is Better?

Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve and Serengeti National Park in Tanzania are two of the most famous safari destinations in Africa. These two protected areas are one ecosystem, the Mara-Serengeti Ecosystem, separated by an international boundary. Although they are connected by the same ecosystem, they experience different seasonal patterns that affect the wildlife movement.

Depending on what you want to experience and see on your East Africa safari, you may visit these incredible safari destinations at different times of year since there is always an abundance of wildlife to see outside the annual wildebeest migration.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

If you want to experience the Great Migration in Maasai Mara National Reserve when millions of wildebeest and tens of thousands of gazelles and zebras move across the savannah plains in search of water and green pasture, the best time to visit is from June to October. During these months, the herds cross the Talek and Mara rivers between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara, facing off with crocodiles in the waters and lions and other predators along the shores. Also, this season is great for seeing the big cats: lions, leopards and cheetahs, as they follow the migration to hunt for their prey.

Because this is a high travel season in the Maasai Mara National Reserve as well as Kenya, safari vehicles are prevalent. It is advised that you book your accommodation well in advance.

Serengeti National Park

Situated on the southern border of Tanzania, Serengeti National Park covers an area of 14,750 square kilometres. The park derives its name from the Maasai Maa word “Siringet”, which means “the place where the land runs on forever”. Living true to its name, Serengeti National Park is famous for its vast savannahs, divided into short-grass, intermediate-grass and long-grass plains where the herds move during the dry season and which are rich in varied wildlife such as lions, giraffes and cheetahs, among others. The long grass plains of the Serengeti are the most remote and rugged, where the migrating herds face the most challenges and dangers. Also, Serengeti has other landscapes, such as the woodlands, which are found in the hilly north; the marshes, which are wetlands that attract several bird species and reptiles; and the kopjes, which are rocky formations rising above the plains and serve as lookout points for predators and prey.

There are numerous private conservancies adjoining the northern areas of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Within these private concessions, guided walking adventures, night safaris, hot air balloon safaris, and exciting nights out, including fly camping under the stars, can be enjoyed.

Serengeti National Park – The Endless Savannah Plains

Serengeti National Park, covering a much larger area, is equally famous for its indigenous Maasai people. The park is world-renowned for its vast and endless savannah plains, acacia trees, and rock kopjes. Also, the Serengeti has many predators, including cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, lions and crocodiles. Explore Serengeti National Park on game drives in open safari vehicles, horseback rides and hot air balloon rides over the park. Also, you can camp under the stars and visit a local Maasai village.

Serengeti National Park on a Tanzania safari is a place where you can experience the wild and wonder of nature at its best. From January through March, you can visit the Southern Serengeti to witness the calving season in which thousands of wildebeest calves are born. Close by are numerous predators seeking prey, creating a dramatic scene on the savannahs and providing unbelievable photo opportunities.
