The Talek Gate is one of the gates to the Maasai National Reserve, located on the eastern side of the reserve. This gate serves as a key access point to the Maasai Mara for travellers staying in Talek Village, where most budget and mid-range accommodations (camps and lodges) are found. 

It is important to note that Talek Gate is very popular with tourists who come on a budget safari or a self-drive safari to the Maasai Mara because of its close location to various accommodations in the Maasai Mara, as well as excellent wildlife viewing grounds.

Gate Timings: Just like other gates in Maasai Mara National Reserve, Talek Gate is open from 06:00 Am to 6:00 Pm. 

Payments: Cash is NOT accepted at the gate. Payments must be made via credit card or M-Pesa. 

Travel Note: if you plan to do a full day Maasai Mara game drive, ensure that you enter the reserve early to maximize your time in the reserve without needing to pay for a second 12 hour entry period. Currently, park entrance fees to Maasai Mara National Reserve are valid for 12 hours.

How To Get to Talek Gate 

By Road – From Nairobi 

The journey from Nairobi, the starting point of most Maasai Mara safaris, to the gate of Talek is approximately 240 km (approximately 5-6 hours), depending on the road conditions. 

The recommended route is 

  • Nairobi → Narok Town (140 km, 2 hours) via the Maai Mahiu Road (B3)
  • Narok → Sekenani Junction (82.5 km, 1.5 hours) on the B3 tarmac road
  • Sekenani Junction → Talek Gate (30 km, 0.5 hours) on a dirt/murram road

Note: The road from Narok Town to Talek Gate can be rough, especially during the rainy season, which is why a 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended. 

By Air 

Ol Kiombo Airstrip is the nearest airstrip to Talek Gate in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The airstrip is located inside the reserve, about 20 minutes from Talek Gate. 

Scheduled flights to Maasai Mara National Reserve operate from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to Ol Kiombo, operated by several airlines, including Safarilink, AirKenya and Fly ALS. 

Flights to Maasai Mara take approximately 45 minutes, making it the fastest way to reach Talek from Nairobi.

  • Situated far from Mara Triangle & Mara River – If you are staying near Talek, you may not be able to reach the Mara Triangle or the Mara River in a single game drive session.
